US seeks to resume talks with Iran on nuclear program

The United States wants to return to the issue of Iran’s nuclear program in talks with Tehran.

According to the report, officials from US President Donald Trump’s administration told representatives of Persian Gulf countries in closed-door meetings that Washington intends to focus future US-Iran talks on Iran’s nuclear program rather than on reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian representatives, meanwhile, have openly told regional countries that they will agree to discussions on the nuclear program only after the Strait of Hormuz issue is resolved and the blockade imposed by the United States on Iranian ports is lifted.

It was reported that the United States and Israel began a war against Iran on February 28. Although Washington and Tehran signed a memorandum of understanding in June through Pakistani mediation envisaging an immediate cessation of military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon, the United States resumed large-scale strikes against Iran early on July 8.

The Strait of Hormuz is a vital waterway linking the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. It is one of the world’s most important energy transit routes, making developments affecting its navigation a major regional and international concern.
