A sailor has been killed following a shooting incident aboard the USS John F. Kennedy, an aircraft carrier belonging to the United States Navy.

Operative Information Center-OMM reports that the incident was confirmed by a spokesperson for the US Navy, as cited by the military publication "Stars and Stripes."

According to the reports, the sailor suspected of carrying out the shooting has been taken into custody. Authorities have stated that formal charges have not yet been filed against the individual as the investigation remains ongoing.

The incident occurred while the vessel was docked at the shipyard in Newport News, Virginia. The USS John F. Kennedy is the second Gerald R. Ford-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier in the US Navy fleet. The vessel successfully completed its initial sea trials in February of this year. While the ship has not yet been officially commissioned into the fleet, the US Navy currently plans for its full operational deployment to take place in March 2027.
