The US administration has said it is open to discussing with the People’s Republic of China shared security risks posed by artificial intelligence (AI) technologies and the threat of a complete decoupling of digital ecosystems.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent made the remarks in an interview with Axios.
According to the report, Bessent spoke ahead of planned high-level meetings in New York with He Lifeng, vice premier of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China. The secretary stressed that the United States continues to hold a leading position in the global AI sector and said Washington was ready to engage with Beijing to prevent a sharp separation of technological systems and neutralize shared risks.
The agenda includes security standards for both open-source and closed AI models. The New York talks, which US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer is also expected to attend and which are expected to last several days, will cover AI as well as bilateral trade ties, supply chains for critical and rare-earth elements, and other strategic economic issues.
AI has become a major area of competition between the United States and China, with both countries seeking advances in computing, semiconductors and advanced software. At the same time, discussions on common safety standards are aimed at addressing risks that can affect digital systems and economies regardless of national borders.
