Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff is projected to have won re-election in Georgia, defeating Republican challenger Mike Collins, according to BBC World, citing “CBS News”. The result would push the key swing state further into Democratic control.
Ossoff, a rising figure in the Democratic Party, portrayed Collins as loyal to a “failed president” and made the rising cost of living a central issue in his campaign.
Collins blamed the rising cost of living on former President Joe Biden and defended his support for Trump’s war in Iran.
With polls indicating that Ossoff had a solid lead, Republicans shifted resources from Georgia to other contests.
Georgia’s term-limited Republican Governor Brian Kemp had been the favoured candidate to challenge Ossoff, but declined to run. Political commentators suspected Kemp had stayed out of the race because of Ossoff’s growing prominence, amid speculation that the Democrat might consider a 2028 presidential bid.
Ossoff played down the speculation throughout his campaign, saying on several occasions that he had “zero interest” in running for president.
