Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Türkiye would continue taking steps to advance cooperation with Georgia during a meeting with Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze in New York on Monday.
The closed-door talks took place at the Turkish House, or Turkevi Center, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, according to Türkiye’s Communications Directorate.
Trade, transport and security discussed
Erdogan and Kobakhidze reviewed bilateral relations as well as regional and global developments, the statement said.
The Turkish president expressed satisfaction that Türkiye has been Georgia’s largest trading partner for the past 18 years. Ankara will continue efforts to expand cooperation, particularly in trade, transportation and security, he said.
Erdogan also underscored the importance of maintaining solidarity between Türkiye and Georgia in international forums.
Trilateral cooperation with Azerbaijan
He said making the most effective use of cooperation mechanisms involving Türkiye, Georgia and Azerbaijan would benefit all three countries.
Türkiye recognized Georgia’s independence in 1991, while the two countries signed a protocol establishing diplomatic relations in 1992. Their relations are currently at the level of a strategic partnership.
