Ukraine’s air raid alert app was apparently hacked on Sunday, briefly warning users that Kyiv faced a radiation threat, the Ukrainian Air Force said, according to BBC World.
“The Air Alert application has probably been subjected to hostile interference. There is no radiation threat! Stay calm and follow our updates on our channel,” the Air Force said in a message on Telegram.
The Central Intelligence Agency said on Telegram that the app had malfunctioned and urged people to consult other information sources to clarify the situation regarding air strike threats.
In a separate post, it said the radiation hazard signal had played on loudspeaker devices in the Lviv region because of the “Air Alert” app. It added that there was no radiation hazard.
Officials advised the public to enable smartphone notifications, pay attention to sirens and read information only from official sources.
Vinnytsia oblast governor Natalya Zabolotna said the app had been targeted in a cyberattack. In a Telegram warning, she urged people not to click the link in the message.
The “Air Alert” app is supported by Ukraine’s Ministry of Digital Transformation and notifies users immediately when defence alerts begin and end.
