UK Prime Minister and Labour Party leader Keir Starmer has officially announced his resignation during a statement outside his Downing Street residence in London.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, Starmer stated that he reached this decision following internal party discussions. He noted that he had carefully considered whether he remained the most suitable person to lead the party into the next general election and, after taking into account the position of the parliamentary faction, decided to step down.
Defending his tenure, Starmer emphasized that his successor would inherit a stronger and fairer United Kingdom than the one he took over two years ago. The process to select a new leader is expected to commence on July 9 and conclude by September, before the end of the parliamentary summer recess.
Political observers have identified former Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham as a leading candidate for the new Labour Party leadership, citing his recent electoral success and influence in the northern regions. The UK currently faces significant economic challenges, with the highest borrowing costs among G7 nations. Economists suggest that the incoming government leader will face the difficult task of balancing pressure from financial markets with growing public discontent.
