The United Kingdom and the United States will establish a new artificial intelligence partnership in the defense sector. The initiative aims to strengthen critical infrastructure protection and accelerate threat detection.
The agreement will be announced during UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s visit to New York on Tuesday. The visit is taking place as part of participation in the United Nations General Assembly. Burnham is also expected to meet with US President Donald Trump.
What will the partnership cover?
The cooperation will bring together the UK’s Rapid AI Adoption Taskforce in the Ministry of Defence and the US Department of Defense’s Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office. The parties plan to accelerate the development of “trusted and interoperable capabilities” that strengthen deterrence.
Andy Burnham said the partnership would bring experts together to reinforce critical infrastructure protection and enable the potential of artificial intelligence to be harnessed. The cooperation will support efforts to protect the UK’s vital national infrastructure, including maritime routes and airspace.
UK’s artificial intelligence plans
The UK, which has the world’s third-largest artificial intelligence market after the United States and China, is seeing early signs that the technology could help revive its stagnant economy. At the same time, concerns are growing over the safety of increasingly powerful artificial intelligence systems.
Artificial intelligence is expected to remain a central focus when the UK holds the G20 presidency next year. The summit is planned to take place in November in Manchester, where Burnham previously served as mayor.
Cooperation between London and Washington
The new partnership is being established against the backdrop of long-standing cooperation between the UK and the US in defense, technology, finance and foreign policy.
