Downpours brought by Typhoon Dujuan triggered landslides and flooding along Japan’s Pacific coast. According to NHK, four people died and six others were reported missing in the disaster.
A woman in her 60s died after a mudslide entered her home in Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture. Three other people, aged between their 50s and 80s, were also reported killed by landslides in Kanagawa and neighboring Chiba prefectures.
Search and rescue operations continue
In Miura, south of Tokyo, rescuers cleared debris from homes damaged by landslides and searched for people reported missing.
The storm also disrupted electricity supplies in the region. Tokyo Electric Power Company said power had been cut to about 45,000 customers.
Rivers overflow
Heavy rain caused flooding in several areas, including Sakura in Chiba Prefecture. Residential areas were inundated after a nearby river overflowed its banks.
Resident Richard Yonamine said it was the first time in more than 30 years that he had experienced flooding of this scale at his home.
Heavy rain also caused widespread flooding in Chiba Prefecture last month. Passengers faced difficulties at Narita Airport, while more than 10,000 vehicles were reportedly damaged beyond repair, according to local media.
Typhoon Dujuan struck during a year marked by unusually intense rainfall, flooding and tropical cyclones in various parts of the world.
