Türkiye said Friday that a French-flagged vessel planned to conduct marine scientific research on its continental shelf in the Eastern Mediterranean without authorization, according to Anadolu Agency.
In a written statement, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said the planned research was related to cable-laying activities within Türkiye’s continental shelf. The ministry said the shelf’s outer limits were notified to the United Nations on March 18, 2020.
Türkiye had canceled navigation warnings issued by Greece and the Greek Cypriot administration in connection with the planned activities, the ministry said, describing them as unauthorized.
The ministry said Türkiye’s consent process, required under established principles of international maritime law, had not been completed for the part of the planned activities within its continental shelf.
“Türkiye remains fully determined to protect its sovereign rights arising from international law,” the ministry said, adding that Ankara would continue to pursue cooperation, dialogue and coordination in the region.
