The foreign ministries of 10 countries on Friday criticised the 10-year prison sentence handed to Hong Kong activist Joshua Wong under the National Security Law, calling on Chinese and Hong Kong authorities to respect rights and freedoms in the territory, Anadolu Agency reported.
In a joint statement, the foreign ministries of Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States said Wong was sentenced following a new charge under the law. The statement came months after leaders of the Hong Kong Alliance were convicted under the same legislation.
The ministries said the cases illustrated what they described as the law being used to target people for their political views and activism.
They called for an end to what they termed unjustified prosecutions under the legislation and urged Beijing and Hong Kong authorities to meet their international commitments and respect rights and freedoms guaranteed under the 1984 Sino-British Joint Declaration.
