US President Donald Trump said he would have to make an important decision if a peace agreement with Iran could not be reached.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports, citing foreign media outlets.
“I will have to make an important decision. Will an agreement be reached with Iran that allows them to rebuild the country and make it greater than before? Otherwise, I will have to destroy the Islamic Republic, and I will do it quickly so that they cannot kill more people or destroy countries,” Trump said.
Trump also met with leaders of Middle Eastern countries on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session in New York. The meeting discussed the resumption of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
The US president also did not rule out the possibility of reaching an agreement with Iran immediately after the elections.
“I think we will reach an agreement with Iran immediately after the elections because there is no reason for them not to reach an agreement. They are waiting to see how things go for me in the midterm elections,” Trump said.
The Strait of Hormuz is a key global shipping route connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. Any disruption there can affect energy supplies and international maritime trade.
