US President Donald Trump said late Wednesday that the war with Iran would end “very soon” and predicted oil prices would fall sharply once the conflict was over.
“The Iran war will end very soon … Soon, as they want it to end,” Trump told reporters in Montana. He added that Iran would never have a nuclear weapon and said oil prices would “drop like a rock”.
Earlier, speaking at a rally in Montana, Trump said he was unsure which Iranian officials Washington was negotiating with as it sought to end the conflict.
“They don’t have a navy. They don’t have an air force. Their army is decimated. Their leaders are gone,” he said. “I should have probably left their leaders because I don’t know who the hell we’re negotiating with.”
Trump described Iran as having once been a dominant military force in the Middle East, saying US military operations had significantly weakened its capabilities.
He claimed US strikes had destroyed Iran’s naval fleet and left its military aircraft unusable. Trump said Iran had 159 ships and asserted that none remained operational. He also claimed the country’s fighter jets had been destroyed on its runways.
“They were strong. Now they’re not so strong,” Trump said, adding that Iran had 274 fighter jets and claiming none were available for use.
