US President Donald Trump said Friday that Washington could take action against Iran, while claiming that Tehran was “failing badly.”
Asked by Anadolu why a US response might be delayed until after the Nov. 3 midterm elections rather than carried out immediately, Trump replied: “We may. We will see.”
“I think that they’re failing badly. Their country is failing badly. Their military is defeated. They have no navy. They have no air force. They have 300% inflation, and Iran is in very bad shape,” he told reporters.
Trump did not explain what steps his administration might take or when it could act.
The United States and Israel launched a war against Iran on Feb. 28. Tehran responded with missile and drone attacks in the region, effectively closing the Strait of Hormuz.
The conflict has continued for more than seven months, pushing up global energy prices as commercial oil traffic through the strategic waterway has effectively halted.
A framework agreement signed by the United States and Iran in June, following mediation by Pakistan and Qatar, was intended to halt hostilities and pave the way for negotiations.
Implementation of the agreement has since stalled amid disagreements, including over security and navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
