US President Donald Trump said on Monday that he did not believe China or Russia was helping Iran, arguing that both countries had too much to lose by doing so.
Responding to claims that Beijing and Moscow were assisting Tehran, Trump wrote on “Truth Social” that, if either country was involved, it was “at a very low level,” adding that he did not believe they were helping “at all.”
“They have too much to lose, and we would know about it, and know about it very fast!” he added.
The remarks echoed a post Trump made on “Truth Social” in July. He said then that Chinese President Xi Jinping had told him during a meeting in China in May that Beijing would not sell weapons to Iran “under any circumstances”, including through Chinese companies. Trump also said Russian President Vladimir Putin had told him he would not sell weapons to Iran.
Trump warned at the time that any involvement by China or Russia would be “very bad for them.”
In May, the Trump administration imposed sanctions on several Chinese companies accused of supporting Iran’s military procurement network and providing satellite imagery that allegedly enabled Tehran to target US forces. Beijing has denied allegations that Chinese entities helped Iran’s military.
The US and Israel launched a war against Iran on Feb. 28. Tehran responded with missile and drone attacks across the region and effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global energy supplies.
A memorandum of understanding signed by the US and Iran in June following mediation by Pakistan and Qatar has since stalled amid disagreements, including over navigation in the strait.
