Supporters of Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva rallied along Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro on Monday, backing his reelection bid ahead of the Oct. 25 presidential runoff, Agencia Brasil reported.
“This week will show how my opponent’s party will vote: whether it wants workers to work six days and rest one, or give workers two days off,” Lula said.
The gathering stretched along Avenida Atlantica and occupied several blocks of the beachfront avenue, the newspaper O Globo reported. It followed a pro-Lula rally on Avenida Paulista in Sao Paulo on Sunday.
Lula’s rival, Flavio Bolsonaro, attended a campaign rally in Sao Goncalo, near Rio de Janeiro, on Saturday, according to local media.
The candidates are seeking to consolidate support and attract voters after neither secured an outright majority in the first round on Oct. 4. Bolsonaro received 47.03% of valid votes, while Lula won 45.16%, according to electoral figures.
Lula returned to the presidency in January 2023 after defeating Flavio’s father, Jair Bolsonaro, in the 2022 election. Jair Bolsonaro governed Brazil from 2019 to 2022 and remains a prominent figure in the country’s conservative movement.
Lula has emphasised workers’ rights and social programmes, while Flavio Bolsonaro represents the conservative movement associated with his father. The Oct. 25 runoff will determine who leads Brazil, Latin America’s largest economy, for the next presidential term.
