President Donald Trump said on Saturday that Iran might intensify its actions ahead of the Nov. 3 US midterm elections, arguing that Tehran believes doing so would harm the United States.
Speaking at a campaign rally in Tennessee, a longstanding Republican stronghold, Trump said Iran would “probably do a little bit extra before the election.” He added that the United States “could end it really quick.”
Trump said he had shown restraint toward Iran despite what he described as the destruction of its navy. He claimed that 159 Iranian ships had been sunk since the war began in late February.
He also mused about renaming the Strait of Hormuz, saying: “We’re thinking about renaming it to the Trump Strait.”
Trump has previously suggested that the war with Iran could end shortly after the Nov. 3 congressional elections. Although he is not a candidate in the midterms, he is campaigning for fellow Republicans as they seek to retain control of one or both chambers of Congress.
The United States and Israel launched the war against Iran on Feb. 28. Tehran responded with missile and drone attacks across the region and effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz.
The conflict has lasted more than seven months and driven up global energy prices, while commercial oil traffic through the strategic waterway has effectively halted.
A framework agreement signed by the United States and Iran in June, following mediation by Pakistan and Qatar, was intended to halt hostilities and pave the way for negotiations. Its implementation has since stalled amid disagreements, including over security and navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
