US President Donald Trump has called “false” claims that the development of artificial intelligence could pose an existential threat to humanity.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports, citing foreign media outlets.
He compared concerns about artificial intelligence with warnings previously voiced about global warming.
“The lies about AI being spread by the radical left Democrats remind me of their most recent lies about global warming. Everyone was supposedly going to die from excessive heat. So, what happened?” Trump wrote.
The US president also criticized claims that artificial intelligence could spiral out of control and destroy the world.
“I am the one who exposes lies, and now I will expose another lie — that AI will take over, consume and destroy the world, and that robots will enter our cities and eliminate us,” Trump said.
He described such claims as even more absurd than disputes over alleged Russian interference in the 2016 US presidential election and warnings about global warming.
Trump alleged that those spreading such views were working for forces that do not defend US interests.
The president’s remarks came after Jack Clark, co-founder of Anthropic, told the BBC that mechanisms and rules should be developed to allow AI programs to be completely shut down if they become excessively dangerous.
Earlier, executives and employees of several leading companies operating in the artificial intelligence sector had also warned that the technology could pose a potential threat to humanity.
Against the backdrop of these concerns, shares of some technology companies fell on September 14. Investors began factoring in the possible impact of a slowdown in the pace of AI development on companies’ revenues and market valuations.
Artificial intelligence has become a major area of investment and policy debate worldwide. Governments and technology companies are continuing to discuss safety standards, oversight mechanisms and safeguards for managing the technology’s potential risks.
