A crude oil tanker was struck by an unidentified projectile as it completed an outbound transit through the Strait of Hormuz, the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) agency said, according to Anadolu Agency.
UKMTO said it had received information about the incident from a verified source. The agency did not identify the vessel, specify where it was hit or report the condition of its crew.
Authorities are investigating the incident. UKMTO advised vessels passing through the area to exercise caution and report any suspicious activity to the agency.
The incident comes amid heightened security risks to commercial shipping in the Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz following attacks on vessels in recent months.
Maritime security tensions have persisted amid the confrontation between Iran and the United States, raising concerns about navigation through the strait, a vital route for global energy shipments.
