An oil tanker caught fire after striking a naval mine in a restricted area east of the Strait of Hormuz, Iran’s Navy said on Monday, according to Anadolu Agency.
The Navy’s public relations office said in a statement that the tanker had entered a “prohibited and unsafe” zone with its navigation systems switched off.
The Navy warned tanker owners not to attempt to cross restricted waters without coordination or while their identification systems were disabled.
It said shipowners should learn from vessels that enter prohibited areas after switching off their identification systems, warning that doing so could result in a mine strike and fire.
The statement did not identify the tanker or provide information about its crew, casualties or the extent of the damage.
The incident comes amid heightened maritime tensions in the Strait of Hormuz following the US-Israeli war on Iran.
