A tanker caught fire after sustaining damage while sailing east of the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday, according to the Iranian Navy.
The navy’s public relations office said monitoring teams detected the vessel around midday after it had switched off its tracking systems and attempted to pass through what it called a “restricted area.”
The statement did not say what caused the damage or fire, identify the tanker, or provide details about its crew or any possible casualties.
The navy said it had adopted a new operational deployment, positioning units east of the Strait of Hormuz, in the Arabian Sea and in the Gulf of Oman. It said it was continuously monitoring vessel movements in the area.
It also warned vessels against switching off electronic equipment and urged them to coordinate with Iranian armed forces to ensure safe passage through the area.
