A schoolgirl was seriously injured in a chainsaw attack in a classroom in Anantapur district, Andhra Pradesh, India, and was taken to hospital in critical condition. According to AnewZ, the Class 10 student suffered serious injuries to her head, neck and back. A classmate who tried to protect her was also injured.
The incident took place at Zilla Parishad High School in Raptadu mandal of the district. Local media reports said the suspect was a distant relative of the victim and had allegedly engaged in stalking. However, authorities have not confirmed the attacker’s identity or established a motive for the attack.
Local media reported that police had detained a man in connection with the attack.
A teacher who witnessed the incident told local media about the moments when the attacker entered the classroom: “He came into the classroom, and at that moment I didn’t understand what was happening. Then he went straight toward the students and attacked the girl before I realized what was happening.”
“I froze and stood by the wall. The children started running around,” the teacher said through tears, adding that the man acted alone.
The attacker initially fled the scene after the incident. The injured girl and her classmate were taken to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment.
Videos showing children crying in fear at the school later spread widely on social media.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu expressed concern over the incident and contacted district and medical officials to ensure the victims received urgent medical care.
