Saudi Arabia’s air defenses intercepted and destroyed an enemy drone over the Riyadh region, the coalition fighting the Houthis in Yemen said. No injuries were reported.
AnewZ reported that coalition spokesman Turki al-Maliki said the drone’s debris fell to the ground and relevant authorities were investigating the area. He wrote on the X platform that authorities were continuing their inspections.
Drones had also been intercepted in other parts of Saudi Arabia before the incident. The coalition said on Friday, October 31, that it had destroyed drones over the Eastern Province and the southern region.
The coalition also said it had intercepted a drone over Medina. The Houthis denied carrying out attacks that day.
Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province is of particular importance because it holds a large share of the country’s oil and gas reserves and is home to Saudi Aramco’s headquarters. The company’s headquarters was seriously damaged in an attack earlier in October.
Since 2015, Saudi Arabia has led a military coalition supporting Yemen’s internationally recognized government. The Iran-allied Houthis seized the capital, Sanaa, in 2014 and continue to control much of the country.
The latest escalation comes amid the wider war involving the United States and Israel against Iran, raising concerns that the conflict could spread to other parts of the Middle East.
Although no injuries were reported in the latest interceptions, repeated attacks on Saudi territory and energy infrastructure are increasing the security risks facing the country.
