Speaker of the Milli Majlis (National Assembly) Sahiba Gafarova has met with the King of Bahrain, Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, as part of her official visit to the Kingdom of Bahrain.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, during the meeting, the King of Bahrain highly appreciated the development of Azerbaijan and emphasized the importance of further deepening relations between the two countries. He noted that parliaments play a crucial role in expanding bilateral ties and fostering mutual understanding between the two nations.
Sahiba Gafarova stated that Azerbaijan–Bahrain relations are based on the principles of friendship, mutual trust, and respect. She highlighted that the existing political ties create broad opportunities for cooperation in other sectors, including the economy, investment, and tourism. The Speaker of the Milli Majlis also pointed out that this year marks the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Azerbaijan and Bahrain.
During the conversation, satisfaction was expressed regarding the mutual support the two countries provide to each other within the framework of international organizations. Sahiba Gafarova noted that this visit marks the first official visit of a Speaker of the Milli Majlis to the Kingdom of Bahrain. She emphasized that mutual visits and close contacts between parliamentary speakers and deputies contribute significantly to strengthening ties between the legislative bodies of both countries.
Azerbaijan and Bahrain have maintained diplomatic relations since 1996, collaborating primarily within the framework of the United Nations and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). Both nations have recently sought to diversify their economic partnerships beyond the energy sector, focusing on trade, logistics, and cultural exchange. This high-level meeting in Manama underscores Baku's commitment to strengthening its diplomatic footprint in the Gulf region and enhancing inter-parliamentary diplomacy.
