Nigerian opposition politician and presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore was reportedly abducted by armed men in the southwestern city of Ado-Ekiti, and his whereabouts are unknown, Anadolu Agency reported.
According to a post on Sowore’s official social media accounts, the attackers entered Tawakalitu Restaurants and Catering Services on Friday, where he was present, and forcibly took him away. “Armed thugs kidnap Sowore. His current location is unknown!” one post said.
Parts of the restaurant were vandalised, with several tables and chairs damaged. A vehicle outside the establishment was also reportedly damaged, while another had a flat tyre.
Sowore is a journalist, human rights activist and publisher of “Sahara Reporters”. He is the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in Nigeria’s 2027 general election and has been a vocal critic of successive administrations.
His presence in Ekiti was linked to activities surrounding his presidential campaign. The reported abduction has raised concerns about the safety of political candidates and the environment for opposition campaigning ahead of the 2027 elections.
Ekiti State Police Command spokesperson Sunday Abutu did not respond to Anadolu Agency’s calls and text messages seeking comment by the time of publication. Sowore’s whereabouts remained unknown.
