Romanian President Nicuşor Dan has expressed interest in hosting more US military forces in the country, saying the move would benefit both sides.
“Operative Information Center-OMM” reports that foreign media outlets published the remarks.
“We would very much like to see American soldiers on our territory. This would be highly beneficial for both countries because we are located very close to the Middle East and the Mediterranean,” he said.
According to Dan, the two countries already cooperate in the military field. Romanian military bases have previously been used to refuel US aircraft and station military equipment, but the president believes the partnership could be developed further.
“We want more American companies to invest in Romania. We have the necessary conditions, educated people in science and technology, and strong potential in the energy sector,” the president added.
More than 5,500 military personnel from NATO member states are currently stationed in Romania, including approximately 1,500 US troops.
Romania joined NATO in 2004 and has since served as an important element of the alliance’s eastern flank. Its Black Sea coastline and proximity to the Middle East give the country strategic importance for allied air, maritime and logistics operations, while its energy resources and infrastructure may also support broader economic cooperation with the United States.
