The possible withdrawal of Iran from the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) could be included on the agenda of a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told RIA Novosti.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that, answering a question about whether Tehran’s intention to leave the NPT would be discussed at the expected meeting between the two leaders, Peskov said the matter would depend on Iran taking the initiative.
The Kremlin spokesman said that if Iran considers it necessary to inform its Russian partners about the matter and the relevant plans move toward implementation, it could be examined in detail during high-level talks.
Putin and Pezeshkian have previously held a phone call. During the conversation, they stressed the importance of further deepening the strategic partnership between Moscow and Tehran and continuing coordinated action on regional security issues.
The NPT, which entered into force in 1970, is an international treaty aimed at preventing the spread of nuclear weapons, promoting cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy and advancing nuclear disarmament. Iran is a party to the treaty.
