US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has signed a directive aimed at protecting the midterm elections scheduled for November from foreign threats.

Under the directive, US Cyber Command and Pentagon intelligence agencies will pay particular attention to cyber threats related to the elections.
Measures carried out in coordination with federal, state and local authorities will focus on preventing foreign interference and attempts by foreign actors to disrupt the elections.
Pentagon representative Sean Parnell said free and fair elections form the foundation of the US republic:
“Working closely with federal, state and local partners, US Cyber Command and the Department of Defense’s intelligence agencies will protect the integrity of American election systems, identify malign influence by foreign actors and safeguard democratic processes from foreign interference while protecting fundamental freedoms.”
General Joshua Rudd, head of US Cyber Command and director of the National Security Agency, said the two agencies were already working together to identify cyber threats.
US Cyber Command is responsible for conducting and coordinating cyberspace operations, while the National Security Agency provides intelligence and cybersecurity support. Such cooperation is intended to help identify potential threats to election infrastructure and strengthen coordination among the authorities responsible for election security.
