Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has arrived in New York to lead his country’s delegation. During the high-level week of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, he will present Islamabad’s position on regional security, diplomacy and global challenges.
Shehbaz Sharif is accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Special Assistant Tariq Fatemi. The prime minister is expected to hold bilateral meetings with world leaders and meet with the UN secretary-general.
What will Shehbaz Sharif announce at the UN?
The prime minister is scheduled to address the 193-member General Assembly on Sept. 25. The Prime Minister’s Office said Shehbaz Sharif would emphasize dialogue, diplomacy and the peaceful resolution of conflicts amid changing regional and global security conditions.
His speech will also cover Pakistan’s diplomatic and mediation efforts to reduce tensions and promote regional peace, as well as sustainable development, climate change, the fight against terrorism, Islamophobia and global economic challenges.
Shehbaz Sharif will also address the issues of Gaza and Jammu and Kashmir and outline Islamabad’s position on the right to self-determination. Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has listed UN reform and the challenges facing the Global South among the key priorities of the General Assembly.
Pakistan expresses support for Saudi Arabia
Ishaq Dar met with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. According to Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dar expressed solidarity with Saudi Arabia and condemned recent attacks against the kingdom.
The meeting discussed the Mutual Defense Agreement between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, the two countries’ commitment to cooperation under the document, and regional peace, stability and security.
Visa requirements for diplomatic and service passport holders to be abolished
Pakistan and Saudi Arabia have abolished visa requirements for holders of diplomatic, service or special passports under an agreement signed on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. Ishaq Dar and Faisal bin Farhan signed the document.
Ishaq Dar said the move would help facilitate high-level ties and institutional exchanges between the two countries.
The high-level week of the UN General Assembly is being held from Sept. 22 to 28. More than 130 heads of state and government are expected to attend the event.
