Pakistan has officially joined a Saudi Arabia-led international maritime coalition aimed at ensuring the security of shipping routes in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the decision to establish the coalition was announced following a high-level meeting in Riyadh, which saw the participation of representatives from 43 countries and the European Union.
Saudi Arabia will lead the coalition and host its headquarters. Participating nations emphasized that the primary objective of the initiative is to bolster maritime security, protect freedom of navigation, and safeguard international trade routes against emerging threats.
Recent attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea have forced numerous shipping companies to reroute their vessels around the southern tip of the African continent. This shift has resulted in increased freight costs, higher insurance premiums, and extended delivery times, disrupting global supply chains.
For Pakistan, the Bab el-Mandeb Strait holds significant strategic importance. The country relies heavily on this maritime corridor for its exports to Europe, North Africa, and the Mediterranean region.
Analysts suggest that Pakistan's participation in the coalition will not only strengthen its maritime security posture but also contribute to the long-term development of the Gwadar Port and the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor. Furthermore, this move is expected to deepen the strategic partnership between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, reinforcing their cooperation on regional security matters.
