Norway’s Royal House has announced the death of 94-year-old Princess Astrid.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that the Royal House said the news of Princess Astrid’s death had been received with great sorrow.
It said she died after her brother, King Harald V, passed away on Aug. 28.
Born in Norway in 1932, Astrid became the country’s “first lady” at the age of 22 after her mother, Märtha, died in 1954.
Princess Astrid served in that role for 14 years, until her brother Harald married in 1968.
She continued to attend official events involving the royal family in subsequent years.
Princess Astrid attended the funeral ceremony held for her brother in Oslo on Sept. 9, according to reports.
King Harald V of Norway died at the age of 89 on Aug. 28.
He was born on Feb. 21, 1937, and acceded to the throne following the death of his father in 1991.
Princess Astrid was a member of Norway’s royal family and played a prominent public role during the period between the death of her mother and her brother’s marriage. She remained involved in royal duties and represented the family at national occasions over the following decades.
