Former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak has paid a 50 million Malaysian ringgit ($12.3 million) fine in a corruption case linked to state investment fund “1Malaysia Development Berhad” (1MDB), paving the way for him to serve the remainder of his prison sentence under house arrest, according to Anadolu Agency. Malaysia’s state-run Bernama news agency reported the payment on Friday.
Last month, Malaysia’s King Sultan Ibrahim granted Najib a conditional pardon allowing him to serve the rest of his prison term under house arrest until Aug. 23, 2028, provided he paid the fine and met other requirements stipulated in the pardon order.
Najib, 73, has been held at Kajang Prison since Aug. 23, 2022, after Malaysia’s Federal Court upheld his conviction in a corruption case involving “SRC International”, a former unit of 1MDB.
In 2020, he was convicted on seven charges of abuse of power, criminal breach of trust and money laundering involving 42 million ringgit ($10.3 million) transferred from “SRC International” into his accounts. The case is widely known as the 1MDB corruption scandal.
Najib was initially sentenced to 12 years in prison. In 2024, the Pardons Board under the previous king halved his sentence to six years, moving his scheduled release date to Aug. 23, 2028.
