A minor carried out a shooting near a school in Turgutlu district of Turkey’s Manisa province.Eleven students were injured, two of them seriously, in the incident.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that Turkish Justice Minister Akın Gürlek issued an official statement on the incident.
The minister said that two prosecutors were assigned to the investigation under the coordination of the Turgutlu Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office immediately after the incident. Law enforcement officers detained the suspect shortly afterward.
As part of the investigation, the child accused of carrying out the attack, as well as the child’s mother, father and grandfather, who was identified as the owner of the weapon used in the incident, were detained.
Law enforcement agencies are investigating how the weapon came into the child’s possession, the conditions under which it was stored, the parents’ duties of supervision and care, and allegations of bullying before the incident.
Akın Gürlek stressed that no negligence concerning children’s safety would be overlooked and that those responsible would be held accountable under the law. The relevant authorities are closely monitoring the treatment of the injured students.
School shootings involving minors raise broader concerns about safe firearm storage, adult supervision and the prevention of peer violence. Investigators are expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine whether any breaches of legal responsibilities contributed to it.
