Sixteen of the 60 people detained in a corruption investigation involving Mersin Metropolitan Municipality and the Yenişehir and Mezitli municipalities in Türkiye have been arrested.
Operative Information Center-OMM reported, citing Haber Global, that the arrests were made as part of the investigation.
Those arrested include Yenişehir Mayor Abdullah Özyiğit and Mezitli Mayor Ahmet Serkan Tuncer.
Mersin Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office initially ordered the detention of 59 people as part of the corruption investigation involving Mersin Metropolitan Municipality. A further detention order was later issued, bringing the number of suspects to 60.
Municipalities in Türkiye are responsible for local services and administration. Corruption investigations may examine alleged bribery and misuse of official authority, with prosecutors directing the inquiry and courts deciding on detention and other legal measures.
