Kenya has reported its first case of Ebola virus infection.
“Operative Information Center-OMM” reports that foreign media outlets have published the information.
The patient was in the capital, Nairobi, and later died, according to the reports.
The patient was infected with the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus.
The patient had lived in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) for the past seven years. Symptoms reportedly appeared about a month ago. After receiving treatment at several hospitals in the DRC, the patient travelled to Kenya via Uganda.
The patient arrived by plane at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi at 13:10 on Oct. 3. There were 23 passengers on board. After standard medical screening and passport checks, relatives and friends took the patient to a hospital in Nairobi, where the patient was immediately isolated in a separate ward. The patient later died.
There is currently no officially licensed vaccine or specific treatment for the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, according to the reports.
Ebola is a serious viral disease that can spread through direct contact with the blood or bodily fluids of an infected person. Public health authorities typically rely on isolation, contact tracing and infection-control measures to limit transmission during an outbreak.
