EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has warned that the gap between international support for a two-state solution and realities in Gaza and the occupied West Bank is widening, according to the original report.
Speaking at the Global Alliance for the Implementation of the Two-State Solution, Kallas said backing for a Palestinian state alongside Israel remained strong, but developments on the ground were moving in the opposite direction.
“The ambition of our global alliance and indeed the New York Declaration is increasingly at odds with the hard realities on the ground,”
she said.
Fighting and humanitarian needs in Gaza
Kallas said progress in Gaza remained “far too limited”, with strikes continuing and humanitarian needs still acute. She added that international commitments had yet to bring tangible improvements for Palestinians.
Settlement expansion in the West Bank
In the West Bank, she warned that continued violence and the expansion of settlements were undermining the viability of a two-state solution.
Kallas called on countries to “close the gap between commitments and actions and realities on the ground”.
She also said the Palestinian Authority had made progress on reforms despite “extremely difficult circumstances” and stressed that the process should continue.
The EU foreign policy chief said the bloc supported preparations for Palestinian legislative elections. She added that the EU was working to promote stability and economic sustainability in the West Bank, as well as early recovery in Gaza.
