EU foreign ministers have approved what foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas called the bloc’s largest expansion of its sanctions list since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022. More than half of the new listings are linked to the production chain for ballistic missiles, she said.

The European Union has adopted nearly 1,600 new sanctions listings targeting Russia’s military-industrial complex, the bloc’s foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas announced on Monday.

In a post on “X”, Kallas described the move as the EU’s “single largest expansion” of its sanctions list since the war in Ukraine began in February 2022.

More than half of the new listings are connected to the production chain for ballistic missiles, Kallas said, adding that the measures would make it harder, slower and more expensive for Russia to produce weapons used against Ukrainians.

Separately, the EU Council said it had extended the bloc’s sanctions framework targeting the proliferation and use of chemical weapons for five years, until October 30, 2031.

The validity of individual sanctions listings under that framework was extended for one year, until October 30, 2027. The measures currently apply to 31 individuals and six entities, the Council said.

Those listed face asset freezes, and EU citizens and companies are prohibited from making funds or economic resources available to them, directly or indirectly. The individuals are also subject to travel bans to the EU.
