Iranian ship sinks off Sri Lanka: 30 rescued, 101 missing

An Iranian vessel has sunk off the coast of Sri Lanka following a reported attack by a submarine, leaving at least 101 people missing and 78 others injured.

Operative Information Center-OMM reports that Sky News, citing sources within the country's naval forces, confirmed the incident occurred in the territorial waters of the island nation. The identity and affiliation of the submarine involved in the attack remain unknown at this time.

Earlier today, Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath stated that military personnel successfully rescued at least 30 people from the sinking vessel. According to Operative Information Center-OMM, citing Reuters, the Foreign Minister issued an official statement confirming that the rescued individuals have been transported to local hospitals for urgent medical attention.

The Ministry of Defense of Sri Lanka previously announced that the Navy launched a search and rescue operation immediately after receiving a distress signal from the ship. Local media reports indicate the vessel sent the emergency call while positioned off the coast of Galle, located in the southern part of the country. While the Minister did not provide further specific details regarding the cause of the sinking, he emphasized that all necessary measures are being taken to manage the crisis.
