The latest summit of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) has opened in the Avaza National Tourist Zone on Turkmenistan’s Caspian Sea coast. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is also attending the high-level international event.
Operative Information Center-OMM reports that the Iranian president joined an expanded session of the CIS Council of Heads of State as a guest of honor. The event is being described as the first time in the organization’s history that a leader of a non-member state has attended an expanded session of a CIS summit.
Under agreements reached between Ashgabat and Tehran, Pezeshkian is expected to speak at discussions on regional security, the development of transport and logistics corridors, energy cooperation and environmental challenges in the Caspian Sea. He is also expected to hold several bilateral meetings.
