Former Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard has discussed possible sanctions in the case concerning Manchester City’s alleged breaches of English Premier League financial rules. He said he did not consider relegation to the Championship a fair punishment for the club.
Gerrard said such a sanction would leave Manchester City with the opportunity to return to the Premier League and reclaim its place, while other clubs would have to face the team every week. He proposed that the case be handled directly in the Premier League and that any punishment remain in force for several seasons.
“I think there should be a ban on registering players for a period, and points should be deducted from the team for a certain time. The club should also face the same difficulties other teams have faced over nine or 10 years,” Gerrard said on “The Overlap.” ESPN quoted him as saying.
Manchester City has been found guilty on 114 of 115 counts. The allegations relate to inaccurate financial reporting, payments to players and coaches, and failures to comply with financial control requirements.
