Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright has said Manchester City should receive an unprecedented punishment for breaching the English Premier League’s financial rules.
The “Citizens” have been found guilty of 114 of 115 charges. Wright described the case as “fraud on an industrial scale.”
“An unprecedented punishment is required here. This is the most important day for the Premier League. They have challenged an entire country. This is very dirty business,” he said.
Wright noted that Manchester City’s upcoming away match against Liverpool could create problems for the club. He said Liverpool had previously been Manchester City’s main rival and that Jurgen Klopp had made considerable efforts to defeat the team.
“This probably affected Klopp as well. It is very sad. Most likely, the matter will go as far as legal proceedings,” Wright added.
Earlier, former Manchester City chairman David Bernstein called for the club’s board to be removed from office. Wright’s remarks were reported by the Daily Mail.
The Premier League’s financial regulations are designed to promote financial sustainability and competitive balance among clubs. Disciplinary proceedings in such cases can involve appeals and legal challenges before any final sanction is implemented.
