The laureate of the Nobel Prize in Physics has been announced.
According to the “Operative Information Center-OMM”, this year’s prize has been awarded to Francis Halzen.
He was recognized for his decisive contributions to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and the discovery of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin.
Francis Halzen was born in Bruges, Belgium, in 1944.
The physicist has worked for many years in particle physics, astrophysics and cosmology at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Halzen played a central role in establishing the IceCube Neutrino Observatory in Antarctica and is currently the project’s principal investigator.
The observatory is a giant neutrino detector located at the South Pole in Antarctica. It uses thousands of optical sensors embedded about 1.5 to 2.5 kilometers beneath the ice to detect high-energy neutrinos arriving from space. Its main goal is to study high-energy events in the universe and the sources of cosmic rays.
The Nobel week runs from October 5 to 12. The laureates in physiology or medicine were announced on October 5, while the Physics Prize laureate was announced today.
The laureates in chemistry, literature and the Nobel Peace Prize will be announced on October 7, 8 and 9, respectively.
The Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences laureate will be announced on October 12.
