France will deploy security forces in large numbers for nationwide protests planned for Saturday, the government announced on Tuesday, according to Anadolu Agency.
Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu told the National Assembly that there would be a “massive” security deployment for what he called the “second phase” of the mobilization.
Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said authorities would increase the deployment in terms of both resources and responsiveness, broadcaster BFMTV reported.
The government also said overnight curfews in several cities would be extended for a second night “where the situation requires it,” after violent demonstrations over the weekend against the high cost of living.
Paris police issued orders banning the transport of fuel and flammable gas in individual containers through Thursday, in a move aimed at preventing unrest and violence around the protests.
The measures cover the Paris metropolitan area. They also ban carrying protective equipment within 100 meters of high schools and higher education institutions, as well as the purchase and possession of pyrotechnic devices.
About 550,000 people took part in 110 demonstrations across France on Saturday, including 110,000 in Paris. Nationwide, about 400 arrests were recorded.
