European leaders have gathered in Rovaniemi, Finland, for a high-level summit dedicated to security and cooperation in the Arctic.
As climate change transforms the Arctic, the talks are focusing on growing geopolitical competition, new shipping routes and access to natural resources.
Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo said Europe must develop a clearer understanding of developments in the Arctic and formulate a coordinated strategy to respond to them.
“First of all, I must say that the Arctic is very important for our prosperity and security,” Petteri Orpo said.
He said the European Union must determine how it can strengthen its position in the region.
Petteri Orpo highlighted the Arctic’s natural resources and the emergence of new maritime routes due to climate change. According to him, these routes are increasing the region’s economic and strategic importance while also intensifying competition for access and influence.
“We have natural resources. Due to climate change, new maritime routes are emerging,” the Finnish prime minister said.
The head of the Finnish government also warned that security threats in the Arctic are increasing and stressed the need for concrete action.
The summit is expected to consider ways for European countries to deepen cooperation in the Arctic and develop a more coordinated approach to security and economic interests.
The Arctic is undergoing rapid environmental and geopolitical change, making cooperation among European countries increasingly important for managing emerging transport routes, resource development and security risks.
