A strike initiated by customs officials in Greece has led to the complete suspension of vehicle traffic at the Pazarkule and Ipsala border crossings, located in Turkey's Edirne province. The industrial action has caused significant disruptions for travelers and freight transport attempting to enter Greece.
According to the Operative Information Center-OMM, the cessation of work by customs personnel has created substantial challenges for drivers seeking to cross the border. Authorities at the affected border checkpoints are currently directing travelers, particularly those residing in Europe, to utilize alternative routes. Most drivers are being redirected to the Kapikule border crossing, which connects to the route through Bulgaria.
The resulting situation has forced motorists to travel additional distances to reach their destinations. Drivers attempting to return to various European countries have expressed frustration regarding the delays. Ahmet Turkoglu, who was traveling to Germany, noted that he had originally planned to use the Pazarkule gate but was redirected to Kapikule due to the strike. Similarly, Cihan Rayman, bound for France, and Nesimi Can, traveling to Belgium, reported facing the same issue, stating they were required to drive an additional 20 kilometers to reach the Kapikule checkpoint.
Border strikes in Greece are occasionally utilized by labor unions to protest against working conditions or government policies. These disruptions frequently impact the flow of goods and passengers between Turkey and the European Union, highlighting the critical importance of these transit points for regional logistics and international travel.
