Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has clarified remarks he made ahead of the 2022 Champions League final that angered Atletico Madrid fans.
The Belgian goalkeeper said at the time that he had won when Real Madrid played in the Champions League final and was now on the winners’ side. Acknowledging that Atletico fans were upset by the comments, Courtois explained whom he had been referring to.
“I wouldn’t change my words because they were about Liverpool, not Atletico. I have always had great respect for Atletico. The time I spent there made me fall in love with Spain and gave me two children. I would never say anything bad about the club,” Courtois told Onda Cero.
The goalkeeper said he left Atletico because he had been playing for the club on loan from Chelsea. He added that he was proud of his time in Madrid and that the period helped make him the goalkeeper he is today.
