Diplomacy remains the only viable tool to restrain military operations and ensure the freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, European Council President Antonio Costa stated.

According to Operative Information Center-OMM, Costa emphasized that the ongoing conflict has reached a dramatic turning point, posing a significant challenge to the international legal order. He noted that the instability has already resulted in a sharp increase in energy prices across the European Union.

The European Council President further warned that the escalation could pose serious threats to European security, particularly regarding migration pressures and heightened terrorist risks. He pointed out that US President Donald Trump and Israel reached the decision to conduct strikes against Iran without prior consultation with their allies.

"While calling on all parties to exercise restraint, cease military operations, and turn to diplomacy, we believe this will also serve to guarantee the freedom of shipping and trade in the Strait of Hormuz," Costa underlined.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most strategically important chokepoints, through which approximately one-fifth of the world's total oil consumption passes. Any disruption to maritime traffic in this region typically triggers immediate volatility in global energy markets and impacts international supply chains. The European Union has consistently advocated for multilateral diplomatic solutions to maintain regional stability and protect economic interests in the Middle East.
