“We strongly condemn and reject the attempt by the spokesperson for France’s Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs to justify the travel warning for Azerbaijan in a statement dated Sept. 17 with claims of a ‘risk of arbitrary detention and unfair trial.’”
"Operative Information Center-OMM" reports that this was stated by Ayxan Hajizada, head of the Press Service Department of Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a comment on the position of the spokesperson for France’s Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs regarding the travel warning for Azerbaijan.
He said that presenting court proceedings conducted in accordance with Azerbaijani legislation in individual criminal cases on the basis of political considerations, as well as attempts to interfere in Azerbaijan’s judicial system, were unacceptable:
“France’s failure to take into account the existing problems in its own law enforcement and penitentiary system while making such allegations against Azerbaijan cannot be ignored. At the same time, the French side’s activities involving violations of international law, racism, discrimination and restrictions on human rights are known to everyone.
We call on the French side to refrain from unfounded and biased claims regarding Azerbaijan, respect our country’s sovereignty and internal affairs, and put an end to approaches that harm bilateral relations.”
France’s travel warning is part of the broader diplomatic exchange between the two countries. Azerbaijan has repeatedly said that judicial proceedings in the country are conducted under national legislation and that attempts to politicize them or interfere in domestic legal processes are unacceptable.
