Azerbaijani forward Lorenzo Mezzotero has been included in Sampdoria’s squad for the match against Ascoli. Head coach Luca D’Angelo called up the 18-year-old for the ninth round of Serie B.
Mezzotero, captain of Sampdoria’s Under-19 team, has made a strong start to the season. He has scored eight goals and provided two assists in six Primavera 2 matches. The forward currently leads the league’s scoring charts.
Has made first-team appearances
Mezzotero did not take the field against Ascoli. The player, who wears No. 39, had earlier featured for the first team in the closing minutes of matches against Juve Stabia and Palermo.
Born in Monza, Italy, Mezzotero spent his childhood in Azerbaijan. His family moved to Baku in 2014 because his father worked at SOCAR. He began playing football in Qarabag’s youth teams before joining the academies of Lyon and Neftchi.
The forward returned to Italy with his family in 2020 and trained at Atalanta and Spain’s Marcet academy. He joined Sampdoria in 2024 and made his first-team debut on Aug. 29 in a match against Juve Stabia.
Mezzotero, an Azerbaijani citizen, made his first appearance for Azerbaijan’s Under-21 national team in June this year. He scored the team’s third goal in a 3-0 friendly win over Bahrain on June 6.
