Azerbaijan’s Prosecutor General’s Office and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) have discussed joint efforts to combat terrorism.

Prosecutor General Kamran Aliyev received a delegation led by Roberto Arbitrio, head of UNODC’s Terrorism Prevention Branch (TPB).
Aliyev highly appreciated Arbitrio’s visit to Azerbaijan to attend the fourth Baku Security Forum, held on Sept. 21–23.
He expressed confidence that the visit would contribute to further strengthening cooperation between the Prosecutor General’s Office and UNODC, particularly its Terrorism Prevention Branch.
The prosecutor general said Azerbaijan’s strategic location at the crossroads of Europe and Asia makes it an important partner in combating transnational threats. He emphasized Azerbaijan’s active role in the region in implementing various initiatives and projects aimed at ensuring security along the Middle Corridor and combating corruption and organized crime.
The meeting also addressed effective cooperation established in recent years between Azerbaijan’s Prosecutor General’s Office and UNODC on the basis of specific initiatives.
In this regard, the successful organization of a high-level plenary session titled “Mobilizing Law Enforcement for Climate Action” on the sidelines of COP29, held in Baku in November 2024, was recalled.
The parties also noted that the high-level organization of the sixth plenary meeting of the UN Global Operational Network of Anti-Corruption Law Enforcement Authorities (GlobE Network), held in Baku on May 20–23, 2025, was an important example of cooperation. More than 300 representatives of over 120 government bodies from 92 countries participated in the meeting.
The meeting emphasized the importance of expanding cooperation with UNODC’s Terrorism Prevention Branch. The sides discussed practical cooperation opportunities in such areas as new and emerging terrorist threats, terrorist financing, links between terrorism and organized crime, critical infrastructure protection, and combating the misuse of new technologies and virtual assets for terrorist purposes.
Aliyev highlighted the importance of the 15th UN Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, scheduled to take place in Abu Dhabi from Sept. 26 to Oct. 1, 2026. He said Azerbaijan’s prosecution authorities and UNODC were closely coordinating preparations for joint side events to be organized as part of the congress.
It was emphasized that Azerbaijan’s Prosecutor General’s Office attaches particular importance to continuing active and results-oriented cooperation with UNODC in combating terrorism, transnational organized crime and corruption, preventing environmental crime, and strengthening international cooperation in criminal justice.
The sides also exchanged views on other issues of mutual interest.
